When you exfoliate our skin, you are, in effect, removing the top layer of mostly dead skin cells. Underneath is revealed fresh, smooth, newer cells. Voila – an instant glow!
Some of the immediate benefits of exfoliation are:
The forehead, cheeks, and chin feel smoother to touch.
Fine lines appear diminished.
Buffing away dead skin cells unclogs pores, and reduces the occurrence of blackheads, whiteheads, and acne.
Moisturizers and serums are better absorbed.
Makeup appears even and fresh.
This is a skin care exercise that will benefit almost every skin type.
If you have very dry skin, exfoliating once per week will diminish the ‘flaky’ effect on skin. Most other skin types (normal, oily, combination, maturing) will benefit from a twice weekly exfoliating routine. Those with sensitive skin will want to test the product on a patch of skin for any adverse reactions, before applying. Sensitive skin may benefit from a once-per-week or even once every two week routine.
You may find some factors, such as seasonal changes, climate changes, pollution, even stress, will affect your decision about how often to exfoliate.
There is a broad range of ingredients to choose from when selecting an exfoliant. Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) and Beta Hydroxy Acids utilize fruit acids and/or other chemical compounds to penetrate the top layer of skin, particularly if left on for a few minutes (follow product instructions).
For those who prefer not to use an acid type product, other options include selecting products that will buff away dead skin cells that are clogging pores. A great ingredient that works effectively in this type of product is jojoba beads. Jojoba beads are hardened and rounded minute droplets from jojoba oil. They slough skin effectively without tearing at it. There are many other natural ingredients that work well: oatmeal, and papaya, to name a few.
Over the long term, a proper exfoliation routine with a quality product will be beneficial for almost all skin types, at any stage in the anti-aging process. The reduction in anything from acne breakouts to the reduction in the appearance of fine lines, to the improved skin tone are well worth the effort.
